The department is actively engaged in research ranging from theoretical investigations to practical implementation. During Regional Engineering College (REC) time mainly the institute has focused on teaching activities and research was limited to sponsored projects from MHRD and AICTE
Since, the Institute has transformed to the NIT status by 2002, intensive research has been started in the Electrical Engineering department.
The Department has six broad research groups:
- Power & Energy Systems,
- Industrial Power and Automation,
- Electric Machines & Power Electronics,
- Control System and Instrumentation,
