Department of Physics hosted a colloquium by Prof. P Ajith from ICTS-TIFR on Monday, April 1st, 2024.

The details of the talk is as follows:

Abstract:
Gravitational lensing of gravitational waves: A new tool for astronomy
Parameswaran Ajith
International Centre for Theoretical Sciences, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bangalore, India
The gravitational bending of light was the first observational test that heralded the remarkable success of Einstein’s general theory of relativity. In the last few decades, gravitational lensing of light has emerged as a powerful tool for astronomy. Gravitational waves (GWs) are also expected to be lensed similarly to light. Around a hundred GW signals from coalescing compact binaries have been observed by LIGO and Virgo so far. In the next few years, thousands of such observations are expected. Some of these GWs will be lensed by intervening objects such as galaxies and compact objects. This talk will summarise the prospects of detecting lensing signatures in GWs and will discuss some of the potential new probes such observations will enable

We encourage all students and faculty members to attend this informative session.

The Department of Physics conducted the second in-house symposium Confluentia 2024 on March 23, 2024 (Saturday).

Physics Colloquium on "Gravity as a lens to gravitational waves" by Dr. Otto Hannuksela - 08th December 2023, Friday, 14:30-15:30

Dr. Otto Akseli Hannuksela from Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is visiting our department at NITC for a week and delivering a colloquium on 08th December, Friday. Dr. Hannuksela is an Assistant Professor at CUHK and the Principal Investigator of the CUHK LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA group. His research interests include gravitational waves, dark matter, modified gravity, and beyond-standard-model physics.

The details of the talk is as follows:
Date and Time: 08th December 2023, Friday, 14:30-15:30
Venue : Raman Hall, Department of Physics, NITC
Title: Gravity as a lens to gravitational waves

Abstract: Gravitational waves, similar to light, can undergo gravitational lensing when they interact with intervening matter. Recent studies indicate that gravitational-wave lensing may be observed in the coming years as the current gravitational-wave detectors undergo upgrades. However, the methods to detect and employ gravitational-wave lensing are entirely different from light lensing. Indeed, we detect waves instead of particles, with laser interferometers instead of telescopes, and the source population is one of merging black holes. These distinguishing characteristics not only provide valuable insights into our understanding of the universe but also hold promising prospects for the exploration of new applications. Here I will discuss some of our recent work in the field.

Workshop on "Astronomy and Astrophysics for Amateur Astronomers", May 5, 2023

We are glad to inform you that the Department of Physics, NIT Calicut, is going to organize a one-day offline workshop on "Astronomy and Astrophysics for Amateur Astronomers", scheduled on May 5, 2023. The workshop aims to provide an overview of astronomy and astrophysics to school and college students through lectures, hands-on sessions and poster presentations by experts in the related fields.

The Department of Physics conducted the first in-house symposium on March 25, 2023 (Saturday).

This program is meant as a friendly platform for the faculty and students of the department to present their work and interact. The goal is to develop an atmosphere of free discussions among people working in various fields and promote interdisciplinary research within the department. It would also provide an arena for students to develop presentation skills in a low stake platform.

Schedule, Abstract Booklet, List of Posters.
